Faculty Poems

Ekphrastic poetry has emerged as a pivot for the program, representing more than simply a poetic sub-genre that suits the curriculum. Ekphrasis deepens our relationship to the place we are located. It represents an approach to vision and speech that is responsive and that invites dialogue with art and history. 

Since 1998, poets have come to guide and negotiate words in the context of the semester with students in Orvieto. Each poet has brought new clarities to this territory where vision and language have the possibility to emerge in a specific form. The space for encountering has been a distinct emphasis even as each poet has brought various works of art to consider.

Each poet has selected a work to contribute to the site. We are grateful for all they have done to incite new words and actions among us.
